TED SPEAKER REVEAL

I love watching TED talks! In this project, I decided to make a speaker reveal animation focusing exclusively on type animation as a way to represent the diversity of topics covered in TED.

To create a 3-5 second logo animation for TED that transitions out to an introduction of speaker name.

The Challenge

TED is a global community. We seek to bridge gaps and diversify thinking because we truly believe ideas are for everyone. It is important to us to reach individuals from diverse backgrounds who are curious about the world and interested in helping us spread ideas far and wide.

RESEARCH

TED Conferences, LLC is a non-profit organization that shares international talks online for free. To understand the company better, I researched TED's visual identity and strategies for engaging new conference attendees.

I also looked into TEDx local events, each with its own branding and unique concepts. Exploring TEDx events helped me gather insights into diverse ideas and creative approaches. My goal was to create an animation that stood out from what I observed in the TEDx community, aiming for a unique concept not yet explored within the context of TED.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

This concept explores the idea of a variety of knowledge that is received from the speakers at TED. Different shapes in the animation will represent the diversity of the speakers and the information they share.

Created using Adobe Illustrator.

C1: Knowledge Kaleidoscope

C2: Enlightening Connections

This concept explores the idea of the speakers being the building blocks of TED. Each of them has different shapes and they move in the way to build and reveal the logo.

C3: Building Blocks

This concept explores the idea of the light that represents the knowledge that TED speakers share. The pieces of light coming together and creating a network of enlightening connections.

Selected Concept

After presenting my initial idea, the Art Director provided feedback. Although the styleframes were well-received, I decided to narrow down my approach and focus solely on type animation. Recognizing the power of typography in conveying information, my goal for the opening animation was to explore the wide range of subjects covered in TED conference talks.

ANIMATION DEVELOPMENT

First Pass

In my first pass, I experimented with a range of different types of animations of the type, and created a dynamic fort pass of the TED open.

Second Pass

For the second pass I worked on playing around with more different ways of animating the type, I made sure the words in the animation were legible. I have also given more time for the TED logo to transition into the speaker’s name at the end.

After receiving notes from the second pass, I worked on unifying all of my pieces of type animation together, so it creates smooth transitions and a good sense of eye flow. I made sure all of the words were legible, but at the same time, had dynamic and energetic movement.

This is how the final piece turned out!
